The Background
Established in 1980 by Herschel Polakoff, this rustic homestead takes you through Maryland’s gorgeous Patapsco State Park. Hugging 32 miles of the Patapsco River, we agree this treasure is best viewed by horseback.

The Experience
Date Lead Up - Hop in the Saddle
As we approach our destination, lush fields replace concrete views. We turn the last corner to find an inviting modern ranch. When we park, we spot the horses, modeling a range of warm browns and soft creams.
The owner, Wayne, stops his manual labor to wave hello. “My grandson will get you settled and take you,” he calls out before disappearing. The young man offers helmets (optional but recommended) and pairs us with companions based on our riding experience. I hop on my gal, Delilah, as my date sizes up his ride, Donut.
Now, Donut is a full foot taller than Delilah. With help, my plus one climbs atop his trusty steed, and I laugh at the height difference between us. There are smaller horses, but my equestrian partner wanted the challenge. We exchange pleasantries with the others in our group while the final rider gets squared away.
Date Main Event - Off to the Races
When everyone’s ready, our guide beckons us to follow. Then, all our horses fall in line behind him. I smile as the warm sun hits my skin on our way up a rolling hill. Before we know it, we’re in woods bursting with bright greens. In the shade, it’s the perfect temperature. Though Donut’s trailing me, it’s easy to chat with his passenger while we meander through the forest.
The sound of babbling brooks, chirping birds, and rustling leaves relaxes me with each passing step. We’re returning when our fearless leader makes it interesting. “The path ahead is straight enough to go fast.” That’s all I need to hear. I kick my heels together and Delilah accepts my proposal with glee. She’s booking it as I hold on tight. I glance back to see my date bouncing on Donut as he speeds forward.
Soon, we slow to a stroll. The trees part, revealing the barn at the top of the hill. As we make our ascent, I’m transported to a small village in Italy where everyone knows your name. I find charm and natural beauty in every direction. The quiet landscape is brimming with life.
Date Wrap Up - Back to the Barn
The grandson opens the main gate. As we pass, we trot back into reality. Next, we secure our horses, take a few pictures, and say goodbye to our hooved friends. It’s hard to leave, but we loved every minute. While I exit the parking lot, we wave to Wayne and our guide and drive to stop #2.
