The Experience

Date Lead Up - Selecting Your Saber

I step into the church parking lot and spot my date. Then, we walk along the right side of the building until we find enormous wooden doors. When we pass through them, we’re surprised by the room’s gorgeous medieval-like architecture. The scene is a delightful backdrop for the class. I’m eager to start.

Our instructor James greets us and confirms we’ve signed our waivers. Next, he invites everyone to pick a lightsaber. After some thought, I select one with a dark blue handle adorned with constellations. When I hold it in my hand, I fall in love. By placing the lightsaber in particular positions, I can change the volume and color. I giggle with glee as I effortlessly scroll from red to purple to green with a turn of the elegant hilt. With a flick of my wrist, the exotic weapon and I jump to life.

Date Main Event - Training to Fight the Master

Next, our instructor gives us a brief history of LudoSport while we stretch. Then, we pair up to practice our stance, attacks, and blocks. I’m beaming as my lightsaber crackles against my date’s after a strike. We’re both getting the hang of it when our teacher announces it’s time to spar. Each of us will challenge the master.

James explains the rules while the more experienced students measure out the combat zone. I laugh at the unexpected Italian commands baked into the instructions. If I’m too close to my opponent, for example, s/he can call out “Distanza” (distance) as a warning. The added European flare is one more reason to love the sport.

Soon, it’s my turn to compete. After a quick bow, we begin. I try to apply the lesson amidst the rapid battle. It may look simple, but my heart beats fast. Each hit receives an “EEE” or “OOH” noise, depending on where we strike on the body. The sounds add a comical touch to an otherwise focused pursuit.

When my time ends, I’m out of breath, but pleased. Not too shabby for a first attempt. Then my partner steps into the ring and I cheer him on. He’s all in and loving it. Before long, he finishes his round with a smile on his face.

Date Wrap Up - Celebrating The Day

Once everyone spars, we unite to review the LudoSport key principles of service, care, and respect. The organization overflows with kindness and support. I’m glad to be part of such a lovely community. At last, we lift our lightsabers and applaud a successful class. Our faces display pure delight as we soak in every moment of the experience. I fantasize about buying a lightsaber as we exit. It’s an unforgettable day, and it’s only 8pm.
