Inside view of the Library of Congress happy hour date

Hot Take: Drinks Are Better In The Library

Experience the stately magnificence of this high-class happy hour date for free. Yes, free. Are you ready for the treasures that await you at the Library of Congress?

The Background

Every Thursday, the Library of Congress welcomes you to bask in the stunning architecture of the Thomas Jefferson building at its Live! At the Library happy hour. Built in 1800, the Library is the nation’s oldest and the largest in the world. The institution’s timeless design and arresting decor make this date a showstopper sure to dazzle your plus one.

The Standout Features

Here’s why this date’s a must in my book:

  • Unforgettable Elegance: If you want to wow your date, this is the place. Every inch of the breathtaking building is impressive and just outside, you’ll see incredible Capitol views. The grandeur creates an intimate setting that breaks routine in the best way.
  • Uncover Their Artsy Side: As you roam the halls, discover your date’s opinion on architecture, history, music, books, and more. This information helps you decide if you’re a good fit, or teach you something new about your partner.
  • Leverage the Space: Going well? Scoot closer while observing an exhibit or a book’s fine print. Not clicking? There’s room to create a distance that makes you comfortable.
  • Price: We love free.
  • No Set Time: It’s easy to cut things short or extend your stay as needed. The flexibility means you’re in control.
  • Drinking Not Required: So many dates revolve around alcohol, but you can have a lovely night getting a non-alcoholic choice or skip ordering altogether.

The Experience

Date Lead Up - Entering the Library

I step out of my Uber at Independence Ave SE and First St. Then I head to the entrance under the building’s external staircase. People buzz with excitement while we wait to pass through security. Once past the metal detectors, the staff point me towards the happy hour check-in and I scan my ticket.

When I round the corner, I’m instantly struck by the unquestioned elegance of the Grand Hall. Grand is an understatement. I’m taking in the marbled stairs, the intricate ceiling, and the mosaic floor tiling when my date taps me on the shoulder. “Isn’t this place insane?” he says, and I agree.

Date Main Event - Savoring its Many Stories

We head to the bar, which offers a variety of wines, beers, non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks. The scene is spacious, despite the buzz of activity. Once we have our libations, we explore. As we move up the engraved staircase, I become high society at an exclusive ball. Eat your heart out, Bridgerton.

Level 2 boasts even more stunning depictions to enjoy. We stroll the halls while discussing the many artistic scenes. When we reach the windows, I’m blown away. The setting sun peaks through the Capitol dome, creating a jaw-dropping glow around the iconic institution. For a moment, it’s just us.

Opposite from the windows, we climb another set of stairs to the Main Reading Room. This home for credentialed researchers is arguably the most spectacular chamber yet. It’s a rare glimpse into the nation’s library that I’m thankful to experience.

Now, we go back to the second floor and enter the exhibits hall. Still more wonder awaits. Conversation flows as we discuss the collection and wind deeper and deeper into the archives. Music, film, photography, history – it’s all on display. Since the collections rotate, you’re likely to always discover something new here.

Date Wrap Up - Closing One Chapter

As I descend the marbled stairs, I steal one last glance at the striking setting. I’m in awe that people over 200 years ago crafted something so exquisite. Then we walk out the doors, past security, and enter the night. With the Capitol up in lights before us, we plan our sequel.

The Planning

No need to figure out all the logistics. We did it for you.

The Pre- and Post-Date Options

Is your story not quite over? Instead of ending the date, let’s keep it going! If you need it, here’s a cheat sheet to guide you to your next destination. The map shows the Library (purple) and post-date options (green) in one place, just for you. Before you go, though, always double check opening times in case something’s changed.

  • Take a Walk: If it’s Spring or Summer, it’s a beautiful time to explore the city at night. Once you exit the Library, head right on Independence Avenue for a lovely stroll down the National Mall with all of its historic sights.
  • Santa Rosa Taqueria (6 min walk): From homemade margaritas that burst with new flavors to locally crafted  tacos served with fresh ingredients, you’ll love it here. Don’t forget about their blueberry cookies. Open Mon-Sun: 11am – 10pm.
  • Hawk ‘n’ Dove (7 min walk): You might rub shoulders with the nation’s political powerhouses at this beautiful establishment. Voted Diner’s Choice in 2019, you don’t want to miss this. Open Mon-Fri: 11am – 11pm, Sat: 10am – 11pm, Sun: 10am – 10pm.
  • Bullfeathers On The Hill (10 min walk): Since the 1980s, this newly renovated institution is a common hangout for House staffers and members. You never know who you’ll see. Open Mon-Fri: 11am – 10pm.
  • Barrel (11 min walk): Home to Capitol Hill’s largest and best whiskey selection, this place offers exceptional drinks alongside Southern comfort food. Come back for their famous brunch. Dinner open Mon-Thurs: 4pm – 12am, Fri: 4pm – 1am, Sat: 4:30pm – 1am, Sun: 4:30pm – 9pm. Note: closing times may be 30-60 minutes earlier depending on demand.
  • Beuchert’s Saloon (12 min walk): As the story goes, the saloon hid its speakeasy ways during Prohibition by posing as a sewing machine shop and gramophone store. This American farm-to-table favorite continues to intrigue with its imaginative dishes. Open Tues-Thurs: 4-10pm; Fri-Sat: 4-11pm, Sun: closed.
