Get lost in the twists and turns of this 7-acre corn maze date. Add hayrides, apple cider, and pig races under a crisp autumn sky for a perfect fall romance.
The Background
Founded by James Moore of England in 1673, Montpelier has been a working farm for over 350 years. Its 125 acres includes a mansion filled with Catholic nuns, a woodlands preservation, and active farming for straw, corn, pumpkins, hay – you name it! Today, the Dunn family operates the farm, living out their dream to improve its Family Farm Park every year. Come back season after season for new Fall Festival activities and even more fun.
The Standout Features
- Make A Move: Being active on a date releases oxytocin that helps you bond. Plus, it’s much more interesting than sitting across from each other at a table.
- Get Intimate: The high corn stalks block out the rest of the world, creating a romantic atmosphere to explore together.
- Explore Different Angles: From hayrides to pig races, there’s plenty of fall activities to try. Each one lets you see a new side of your partner.
- Tap Into Childhood: Be a kid again as you navigate the maze, eat a caramel apple, or pick a pumpkin. When you both have fun, it’s easier to connect.
The Experience
Date Lead Up - Exploring the Surroundings
We park in the enormous lot and arrive at the entrance a little before our 11am reservation. After a quick ticket scan, we don our wristbands and step into an expansive complex bursting with fall activities. As we search for the maze entrance, we spot couples racing on large mechanical pigs. Since there’s no set start time for the maze, we decide a pig race is just what we need.
When it’s our turn, we mount our respective swines and prepare to race. I grasp a lever coming out of my stead. Upon hearing “go,” I move the handle back and forth as fast as I can, laughing as my date falls behind me. Feigning devastation, he asks for a rematch, claiming his pig was slow. Saddling up again, we wait for the signal. Then, it’s full blast on our pink porkers. The race is close as I will my arms to move faster. It’s a photo finish and we agree to tie.
Now that we’re energized, we’re ready for the main event. The massive labyrinth stretches across the horizon. At the starting point, we learn we can rent 3D glasses to guide us through the maze, but we decline. We’re doing it old school. Then, we grab a flag in case we need help and venture into the unknown.
Date Main Event - Navigating the Course
Soon, the bustle of the farm falls away, blocked by the high stalks. We fall into a rhythm of effortless conversation. When the path forks, we choose the way together. Dead ends don’t bother us. We’re still having fun.
Next, we reach a bridge overlooking the entire maze. Wind rustles through the field as we enjoy the peaceful scene together. We lose track of time as we continue along the route. It’s wonderful to breathe in the fresh air, far from the city. Then, the path widens and we’re out. When we glance at the clock, it’s been 35 minutes.
Date Wrap Up - Emerging Victorious
Parched, we sip apple ciders from white rocking chairs outside the cafe. From above, we spy the hayride and have to join. The driver takes us around the farm, past the animals, slides, pumpkin bounce pad, and more. While riding, I discover a charming booth selling corn. My favorite!
When we exit the hayride, I usher my date to the stand. There, I’m thrilled to find they sell Mexican style corn. After ordering two, we lay on the grass eating our treats while listening to a live band. Everyone’s enjoying themselves and the lovely day.
When we’re ready, we head to the parking lot. As we leave, we notice the long lines to enter. We’re glad we came in the morning instead of the afternoon. I hug my plus one goodbye as I walk to my car, knowing I’ll see him again. In fact, I can’t wait.
