I’m hit with a stunning view of the lobby as I walk into the Rooftop at the Tompson in Navy Yard. Straddling industrial modern and 1950s chic, this comfy corner of DC is the perfect backdrop for an intimate performance. When doors open at 7:30 pm, my date and I enter a large room more remarkable than the last. Then, we order drinks and the charming, upbeat atmosphere transports me to the pinnacle of a past era. Beyond the bar, people gather in the quaint space.
When I settle into my seat, I’m surprised by the calm, warm sensation that washes over me. Nearby strangers feel like old friends. We’re connected by the common anticipation as we wait for the show to begin.
At 8:00 pm, the host tells us the event’s history. Many famous artists can trace their start to Sofar Sound. I could hear from the next superstar before they rise to the billboards.
Main Event
Act One. An unassuming woman in sweats takes the stage a few feet from me. I don’t know what to expect. When she sings, I can only describe the sound as ethereal.
